AMSOIL
Synthetic Universal Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) exceeds the
performance requirements for domestic and foreign automatic transmission
fluid applications. AMSOIL ATF provides automatic transmissions,
power steering units and hydraulic equipment with excellent lubricating
protection and better performance over a wider temperature range
than conventional transmission fluids.

Q. How can AMSOIL Universal
Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) with a viscosity of 6.8 cSt be
recommended for DEXRON VI and MERCON SP with respective maximum
viscosities of 6.5 and 6.0 and also be recommended for ATF+4 with
a minimum viscosity of 7.3?
A. AMSOIL positioned the
viscosity of the AMSOIL Universal Automatic Transmission Fluid in
the middle of most of the specifications from many manufacturers.
For years original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) were primarily
concerned with efficiencies at cold temperatures. Cold temperature
performance of fluidity is measured by the Brookfield viscosity
in Centipoises (cP) at -40°C (See chart 1). Chart 1 provides the
maximum viscosity allowed at -40°C. This insures proper flow of
lubrication to internal components at cold temperature for good
lubrication.

As of recent, OEMs have begun to regulate the maximum viscosity
of the oil. It is generally accepted that thinner oils improve operating
efficiency. By limiting the upper viscosity, such as with DEXRON
VI and MERCON SP, OEMs are trying to capture the additional efficiency,
no matter how small it may be. The two newest specifications, DEXRON
VI and MERCON SP, have a starting viscosity maximum of 6.0 cSt and
6.5 cSt respectively. Although AMSOIL ATF at 6.8 cSt has a slightly
higher viscosity than MERCON SP and DEXRON VI and a slightly lower
viscosity than ATF+4 (7.3 cSt), it does not negatively affect performance
in any of those applications. With respect to MERCON SP and DEXRON
VI, AMSOIL ATF fulfills the cold temperature requirements so the
marginally higher viscosity of 0.3 to 0.8 cSt will only provide
better protection. With respect to DEXRON III, MERCON V and ATF+4,
our experience has shown that conventional oils may shear down to
below 5 cSt during use. Additionally, DEXRON VI is recommended as
a replacement for DEXRON III so the lighter viscosity for AMSOIL
ATF is immaterial.
For outstanding performance in transmissions, power steering
and hydraulic applications.
Resists Oxidation and Thermal Degradation:
AMSOIL
ATF resists thermal and oxidation degradation better than conventional
transmission fluids, protecting clutches, planetary gears, valves,
pumps and seals from damaging sludge and varnish deposits. AMSOIL
ATF helps prevent component overheating and ensures cooler, smoother
transmission operation.
Provides Low Temperature Protection:
AMSOIL
ATF outperforms petroleum fluids in low temperature fluidity. In
fact, AMSOIL ATF offers twice the cold temperature fluidity required
by current automatic transmission fluid specifications. AMSOIL ATF
provides easier starting, faster warm-ups, smoother shifting and
improved fuel economy.
Anti-Wear Protection:
AMSOIL
ATF provides smooth shifting and long, trouble-free transmission
life. In addition, the antiwear additive package makes AMSOIL ATF
an excellent lubricant in other hydraulic systems. In tests designed
to measure wear characteristics under severe service and high pressure
operating conditions, AMSOIL ATF far exceeds the requirements of
hydraulic equipment manufacturers.
Extended Drain Intervals:
AMSOIL
ATF is a stable formulation that lasts longer in service than conventional
ATFs. It maintains its viscosity, friction and lubricating properties
for extended periods of time, even under severe conditions. AMSOIL
ATF maximizes transmission performance and service life while reducing
maintenance costs through longer drain intervals.
Applications:
AMSOIL Synthetic Universal Automatic Transmission Fluid is completely
compatible with other synthetic and petroleum automatic transmission
fluids. AMSOIL ATF is a universal, multifunctionalfluid and greatly
reduces the need for specialized fluid inventories and the possibilities
of misapplication.
Problem: AMSOIL INC. has been
informed that some AMSOIL Dealers and their customers have experienced
problems with their local Ford Dealership service department when
bringing in the new AMSOIL Universal ATF for installation in their
Ford vehicle transmission. They have been told that: A) You cannot put a Mercon V labeled transmission fluid in
a Mercon application. B) That you cannot put a Mercon labeled transmission fluid
in a Mercon V application (this is true). C) That you cannot put a dual usage labeled ATF product in
the Mercon application or the Mercon V application. Since the new
AMSOIL Universal Transmission Fluid is labeled dual usage, recommended
for both Mercon and Mercon V applications, some Ford Dealership
service managers are telling their customers that if they put the
AMSOIL Universal ATF product in their transmission it will void
their transmission warranty.
Answer: At least one oil companys
ATF product with a Mercon V rating does not also meet Mercon performance
requirements. This has apparently caused a great deal of confusion
about allowing Mercon V ATF to be back serviceable in Mercon applications.
The AMSOIL Universal ATF has been formulated to meet or exceed both
the Mercon and Mercon V specification, as well as G.M. Dexron III
and Chrysler ATF+4. It is fully supported through documented testing.
It is recommended for and can be used in
ALL of the applications listed on the label. PERIOD.
If someone is misinformed on this issue and actually denies a manufacturers
warranty coverage because of the use of AMSOIL Universal ATF Fluid
in one of the applications for which it is recommended by AMSOIL
INC., the AMSOIL Warranty coverage would apply. The consumers transmission
would be repaired under the AMSOIL Warranty. AMSOIL INC. and our
insurance company will legally pursue the dealership or the manufacturer
to recover our costs. AMSOIL INC. would not make the recommendations
on our label, or issue this statement, if we were not completely
confident of our position on this matter. While we cannot control
what individuals say about this subject, we can and do insure that
consumers can use our product with complete confidence and without
risk.

Service Life:
AMSOIL Synthetic Universal Automatic Transmission Fluid is recommended
for use up to 60,000 miles under severe service* and up to 100,000
miles under normal service* or according to the vehicle manufacturer
recommended intervals, whichever is longer. AMSOIL recommends thoroughly
draining the transmission and flushing with new AMSOIL ATF to achieve
a minimum 90% purity of new transmission fluid. Drain intervals
may be extended further with oil analysis.
