Learn How to Save on Maintenance Costs With Extended Drain Intervals
AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oils are highly resistant to the destructive effects of heat, and do not break down like petroleum oils. This means that AMSOIL Motor Oils can provide much longer drain intervals than conventional lubricants.

For Gasoline Vehicles Using AMSOIL gasoline engine oils 5W30, 10W30 you are able to use the motor oil for 25,000 miles or 1 year, whichever would come first. In Turbocharged gasoline engines the recommendations are 3 times longer or 6 months. If using AMSOIL SDF filters, you would change the filter at 12,500 miles or 6 months, whichever would come first. Using manufacturers filters, you would change them at manufacturers intervals.
You can safely extend your drain intervals using AMSOIL Signature Series 0W30 motor oil 35,000 miles or 1 year. Using an SDF filter, changed at 6 months or 12,500 miles. Using manufacturers filters, you would change them at manufacturers intervals.

For Fleet Vehicles Changing lubricants and fluids eats up a lot of the time and money commercial fleets put into their regular preventative maintenance programs. Safely extending the intervals at which oils are changed is one way to save money and time while maintaining an active and productive fleet of vehicles.
For extended drains to be a viable option, however, contamination must be controlled. Fleet vehicles develop contaminated motor oil in a number of ways. Splash and spray can toss road film and chemicals into the air and straight into the air intake, microscopically fine dust can enter the combustion chamber in a number of ways and diesel combustion itself can create soot and acids.
Oils and greases protect moving parts from the effects of contamination, but are themselves contaminated as they do so and eventually have to be replenished or replaced. Engine oil, for example, must lubricate, cool, clean and protect the inside of an engine. It must function in an environment where clearances are far less than the diameter of a human hair. In this environment, contact between cam-shafts and lifters or meshing gear teeth generates forces measured in tens of thousands of pounds per square inch. But the oil survives to do its job thanks to chemical additives designed to keep it from breaking down. These additives can also increase fuel economy by reducing friction.
However, no oil can withstand the long-term effects of contamination on its own. Oil must be filtered through a medium to remove soot and other contaminants that remain suspended in the oil over time. Acids and other combustion by-products are also removed through oil filtration. These filters can last only so long before they also become clogged with contaminants and must be replaced.
If the rate of contamination in a vehicle’s engine oil is carefully monitored, the life expectancy of both the oil and filter can be dramatically increased, and the amount of downtime related to preventative maintenance can be significantly reduced. Here are a few guidelines to remember when extending drain intervals beyond the manufacturer’s recommendations:
Use Oil Analysis: This service can tell you what contaminants are in your oil and how much life is left. A good oil analysis program can also tell you a lot about the condition of your equipment. AMSOIL recommends oil analysis and works closely with Oil Analyzers INC. to develop lubricant regimens for commercial accounts.
Use Synthetic Oils: Synthetic oils typically have more stable chemical properties than petroleum-based oils. AMSOIL offers a wide variety of synthetic motor oils designed to work with all types of fleet equipment. Amsoil synthetic oils are predominately PAO based, with the exception of Amsoil Xl-7500 series product line, which is Group III synthetic technology.
Install By-pass Filtration: By-pass filters can be used to extend oil life for much greater service intervals. Some owner-operators have extended oil life nearly indefinitely with the addition of by-pass filtration units. The AMSOIL By-Pass Filter can filter out particles as smaller than 1 micron, far smaller than can actually cause damage to internal engine components.
Keep Copies of Your Oil Analysis Reports: An article in Road King magazine from several years ago reported on one owner-operator who had a warranty claim denied because he went 58,000 miles without an oil change (using synthetic oil and a wrapped-media bypass filter) when a con-rod bushing broke. He brought out a stack of oil analysis reports and asked, “Which one of these shows that I should have changed oil?” His warranty was honored.
A Final Reminder: Preventative maintenance checks are also a time when technicians or owner-operators check belts, hoses, electrical wiring, and other important components more thoroughly than during pre-trip inspections. This is also the time that chassis parts get greased. This type of maintenance still needs to be done at the recommended intervals, even if your equipment is operating with extended oil drain intervals.
